We recently upgraded to the most recent version for our Events Calendar. With this version, alternate language support became available. It’s not all-inclusive…Anything actually entered by staff is still English-Only, but it seemed worth trying.
To any of our Spanish-speaking patrons, E-vanced requests feedback. None of the staff actually speak Spanish, so they’ve had community support in the translation. If there are mistakes, let us know, and we’ll pass them along. Similarly, if they did a good job, they’d like to know that too.
While Microsoft has made efforts to get Hotmail/Windows Live Mail to work with Firefox, you may find yourself encountering issues. Especially if you’re still using the Classic view. It’s the Windows Live Mail version/view that has been specifically altered to function for Firefox users. As we generally recommend Firefox to our patrons here in the library, and today ran into an issue with printing from Hotmail, I wanted to give you a head’s up. I myself use the Windows Live view and have not had any issues. The classic version seems to cause the browser to hang up, however.
If you like the Classic version, use Maxthon for your internet session and you ought to be fine.
I started using Microsoft Office 2007 while it was still in beta. I had beta version 1, then the beta refresh, and then I had a trial of the finished product. When my trial ran out and my budget didn’t allow for purchase yet, I was very distressed, but I’d grown to love the newer version, and found it much more friendly to use.
That being said, if you haven’t seen it, be ready for some surprises. The interface has been overhauled, and no matter who tells you, or how many times, you’re still probably going to react with a “What the…?” I’ve seen fellow Computer Geeks do it. But….if you take a few deep breaths, and give it some time, I promise, you’ll get used to it. And while it might not seem so at first glance, it is much more intuitive and it does make life with Office easier.
Major caveat: if you need to take your work to a machine running a prior version of office you need to make sure that when you save it, you select the version for older Office files. Office 2007 natives files use a new format, that even with a converter, may not translate well, or at all, back to Office 2003, XP, etc.
If you need help on saving to a prior version, ask at the Reference Desk, or come back and ask me.
In the meantime, you might want to read up a bit, if you haven’t heard of/seen anything on the new software. Below are some links to some articles that should give you a good idea of what’s in store:

I don’t tend to follow the news, and I’m not really political, but I do practically live on the web, and I know how many of you come to the library to use the web each day, so I thought I’d post this video about the Net Neutrality debate.
New for you! Video-on-Demand. All you need is a computer, high-speed internet access (or your viewing will be quite choppy), and a library card. To get started, visit Goshen’s MyLibraryDV channel to read more about the service, and to download/install the MyLibraryDV download manager. Please do not install this on the library’s public machines. That decision will come from library staff, after we’ve discussed whether or not it’s a viable option with our limited computer numbers.
Some highlights: MyLibrarDV is FREE. Videos are of DVD-quality, and cover a wide range of interests. Currently, there are over 450 titles. Our Program Listing is currently MIA, but will be linked from our site as soon as it’s operational, which should be by tomorrow. Access is simultaneous, which means there will never be a wait on the title you want to view.
I’ve been meaning to write about LibraryELF for quite awhile now, but it must have slipped my mind. It recently came up in conversation again, so here goes.
LibraryELF can help you keep track of your library account in a new way.
From the site:
Who uses Elf?
Anyone who wants to reduce overdues
Families with children and lots of books
Individuals with several library cards
Anyone who requests a lot of holds
What’s delivered?
Email and/or RSS alerts before items are due
Email and/or RSS alerts on overdues and holds
Consolidated list of yours or your family’s library loans and holds
Cellphone text message alerts for holds (US and Canada)
Real-time checking by browser
Not only will LibraryELF alert you about books coming due, overdue books, and holds, it will do it on your schedule. I personally have it warn me 3 days prior to a book’s due date. If I don’t renew, it will keep sending the alert.
LibraryELF can email you about holds without your being signed up for them through the system. I generally check mine out before it gets a chance to tell me they’re here, but for people who currently get phone calls, having an email reminder or a cell phone reminder could be an extra helper.
You can also check your card to make sure no one else has been using it. As in, you can see what you have out. If you want to interact with what you have out, you’ll have to jump back to the catalog–LibraryELF can’t do that part.
I don’t have a family, so I haven’t made use of any of those kinds of features, but I can imagine they’d be oh so handy as well.
LibraryELF is not affiliated with any systems, it’s simply a site that seeks to do something for people that maybe their system can’t/won’t do for them. And it only takes about 5 minutes to get going.
It’s the month of St. Patrick. It’s the month of green. It’s the month of shamrocks. And, yes–it’s the month to celebrate the the great Irish writers. You can find their beautiful and haunting works right here. Explore the tales of James Joyce, Brendan Behan, George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, Frank McCourt, Sean O’Casey…the list goes one. You can also learn about the contributions of Irish-Americans right here in Goshen. From the Civil War to the present day–it’s a great month for the Irish.
