Geography Club | Brent Hartinger

Rating: ★★★½☆

Geography Club

Russel Middlebrook is surrounded by land mines. They walk, they talk, and he sees them every day. Such is life in High School when you’re living with a secret. And he knows his secret is worse than most. He’s gay.

Certain that he is the sole non-straight person in his hometown, he finds himself surprised one night to find that his hometown now has its own gay chat room, and it isn’t empty. On top of that, the other inhabitant is a teen, and goes to his school. It’s unbelievable.

But not as unbelievable as setting a late night rendezvous and coming face to face with the hottest jock in school.

Russel soon finds life is full of surprises. Not only is he not the only one, he is not only one of two. Soon, a sort of support group has formed in the guise of an after school Geography Club. Quickly followed by an expose in the school paper about a group of gay students forming an after school club. Needless to say, the members of the Geography Club are quite happy to find out their cover is not actually blown. It’s just a crazy coincidence.

Still, all is not well within the group, and what seemed a sudden solidarity soon finds itself broken. And then reborn.
